The EU drone regulation defines three categories: Open, Specific and Certified. For most pilots, only the A1/A3 and A2 licenses in the Open category are relevant. Here's how to pick the right one.
A1/A3 — EU proof of competence
The A1/A3 license is the entry point for all hobby and beginner pilots. You take an online test with the aviation authority that consists of 40 multiple-choice questions. With it you're allowed to fly in subcategories A1 (light drones near people) and A3 (all drones at a distance from people).
A2 — Remote pilot certificate
The A2 license is obtained via certified examination centres. It requires the A1/A3 license and a practical self-declaration. With it you may fly C2 class drones closer to uninvolved people in subcategory A2.
STS — Standard scenario
Standard scenarios (STS) in the Specific category make professional operations easier. They are mainly relevant for commercial pilots and require additional training.
Understanding drone classes C0 to C4
New drones carry an EU classification from C0 (under 250 g) to C4 (model flying). Which drone you may fly in which category depends directly on the class and your drone license.
