Up to what altitude are you allowed to fly in the open category?
The EU drone licence (Regulation 2019/947) uses one common theory syllabus in all 27 member states plus Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. Whether you sit the exam with the UK CAA equivalent, the Irish IAA or any other national authority, the questions cover the same nine knowledge areas: air safety, airspace restrictions, aviation regulation, human performance limitations, operational procedures, general knowledge of UAS, privacy and data protection, insurance, and security. What the A1/A3 exam looks like
You answer 40 multiple-choice questions online with your national aviation authority and need at least 30 correct answers (75 %). The exam is free in most member states and can be retaken as often as you like. There is no trick wording — every question maps directly to the official training material. Two to four hours of focused practice is normally enough to pass on the first attempt.
The topics that come up most often
Maximum flight height (120 m above ground), minimum distances from uninvolved people, the difference between subcategories A1, A2 and A3, drone class marks C0 to C4, geographical zones and no-fly areas, operator registration and remote ID, and the data-protection rules when filming. Together these account for the large majority of the exam.
Moving on to the A2 certificate
The A2 remote pilot certificate of competency adds meteorology, drone flight performance and ground-risk mitigation. You first need the A1/A3 certificate, then declare practical self-training and sit an additional theory exam at a recognised entity. A2 is what lets you fly a C2 drone as close as 30 m to uninvolved people (5 m in low-speed mode).
A study method that actually works
