Human Performance Exam Questions
Why the remote pilot is often the biggest risk factor of all — and the questions this topic brings up in the exam.
- Never fly under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Fatigue reduces reaction time and attention
- Direct visual contact takes priority over the camera feed
- Actively maintain situational awareness
- Checklists reduce mistakes made under pressure
A large share of drone accidents aren't caused by technical failure at all, but by human factors: distraction, overconfidence, time pressure, or a loss of situational awareness. That's why the remote pilot certificate tests whether you know your own limits and are willing to abort a flight when conditions — or your own state of mind — aren't right.
Perception and visual contact
The human eye can only track a drone reliably over limited distances; small models become hard to see after just a few hundred metres. Looking down at a screen breaks visual contact, so only brief glances are acceptable. When flying with FPV goggles, a visual observer maintaining constant visual contact with the drone is mandatory.
Stress, fatigue and distraction
Under stress, attention narrows and important information gets missed. Fatigue lengthens reaction time about as much as alcohol does. Pilots flying under time pressure tend to skip the pre-flight check altogether. In the exam, the correct answer is almost always to postpone or abort the flight.
Alcohol, drugs and medication
Operating a drone under the influence of alcohol, drugs or impairing medication is prohibited. Even over-the-counter medicines such as antihistamines or cold remedies can reduce reaction time and concentration. Responsibility always rests with the remote pilot.
Situational awareness and pre-flight checks
Situational awareness means keeping the drone's position, battery level, weather, surroundings and airspace status in mind at all times. Fixed routines help: a checklist-based pre-flight check, a defined return-to-home height, a designated emergency landing spot, and a battery reserve of roughly 30 percent for the return flight.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fly a drone after having a beer?
No. Operating a drone under the influence of alcohol is prohibited and can be treated as an administrative or, in cases of endangerment, a criminal offence.
What does situational awareness mean?
The constant, up-to-date awareness of the drone's position and status, its surroundings, the weather, the airspace, and remaining battery capacity.
Do I need an observer for FPV flights?
Yes. When flying with video goggles, a visual observer must stand beside you and maintain uninterrupted visual contact with the drone.
